There’s Only Ever Gonna Be One Warren Buffett!

It’s a bittersweet Monday for the investing world after Warren Buffett announced that he’s hanging up his boots! The Oracle of Omaha is retiring after a six-decade career that made him THE most famous investor in the world. Everyone can learn something from Buffet, so here’s a quick look at his legacy.

First up, the stats. Buffett's advice to all non-investors is to always put their money in the S&P 500. But his personal goal was to beat the index. After all, isn’t that why we pick stocks ourselves? In this metric, Berkshire has absolutely KILLED it: from 1965 to 2024, its shares grew at an annualized 19.9% vs 10.4% for the S&P 500. That’s outperformance over 60 years. PS - the value of Buffett’s ā€˜Class A’ shares in Berkshire is a whopping $167 billion.

If we had to leave you with two pieces of classic wisdom, they would be:

1) ā€˜Our favorite holding period is forever’: Some of Berkshire’s biggest bets held true to this principle. Buffett first bought Coca-Cola back in 1988. Nearly 40 years later, Coke remains a holding and Berkshire’s stake in the firm is valued at ~$25 billion. Fun fact: Coke paid out dividends worth $770 million to Berkshire in 2024 alone. Always remember that holding onto your winners is AS important as ditching the losers.

2) Taking risks: One of Buffett’s most-repeated tips is to avoid investing in things you don't understand. This is partly why he missed a lot of big tech bets. So it was a little ironic that one of Berkshire’s most profitable investments turned out to be in Apple in 2016. The $40 billion bet multiplied into over $150+ billion before he started reducing Berkshire’s stake in 2024. At the recent AGM, Buffett said: ā€œI’m somewhat embarrassed to say Tim Cook has made Berkshire a lot more money than I’ve ever madeā€ -- a reminder of how important it is to be willing to change one’s mind!
